Tests Carried Out Before Commissioning

1. Visual Inspection

Check alignment of poles/towers

Ensure proper sag and tension of conductors

Verify condition of insulators and fittings

Check danger plates, anti-climbing devices and earthing

2. Continuity Test

Purpose:

To ensure conductor continuity throughout the line.

Method:

Continuity tester or multimeter is used

Confirms no open circuit or broken conductor

3. Insulation Resistance (IR) Test

Purpose:

To check insulation condition of conductors.

Method:

Performed using a Megger

Resistance measured between:

Phase to phase

Phase to earth

Requirement:

IR value should be high (in Mega Ohms).

4. Polarity Test

Purpose:

To ensure correct phase connection and phase sequence.

Importance:

Prevents wrong connections in distribution systems.

5. Earth Resistance Test

Purpose:

To check effectiveness of earthing system.

Method:

Earth tester is used

Earth resistance should be within permissible limits

6. Clearance and Safety Check

Verify ground clearance at crossings (roads, buildings, railways)

Check minimum distance from trees and structures

Confirm compliance with IER / CEA rules

7. Mechanical Load Test

Purpose:

To check mechanical strength of conductors and supports.

Includes:

Pole strength

Cross-arm condition

Tightness of clamps and fittings

8. High Voltage Pressure Test (Where Applicable)

Applied mainly for HT transmission lines

Checks line withstand capability under high voltage
